\"Stunna\"<\/a> One of the three best nights for US football just happened in beautiful Bloemfontein<\/a>, the\u00a0States reaching the finals of the Confederation Cup by\u00a0convincingly shutting down Spain, a side unbeaten since 2006, European champions, and argubly the best team in the world right now.\u00a0 The BBC announcers could confidently predict “Spain will have 70% possession tonight, no doubt about it<\/a>”\u00a0just two minutes into the match, before the US players marked early shots, neutering the\u00a0Spanish midfield, and stomping on their fingers at the US goal.\u00a0 Oguchi Onyewu<\/a> and Jay DeMerit<\/a> were everywhere in the back, and Timmy Howard was the wall he always is.<\/p>\n

Nicest man you’ll ever meet, as an aside.\u00a0 He can’t drink because of tourette’s, but he’d come to every Supporters club do\u00a0we had at the\u00a0old Metrostars\u00a0to hang out with us drunken nobodies.\u00a0 His\u00a0fame is well\u00a0earned on and off the pitch.<\/p>\n

But the early goal by Jozy Altidore<\/a>, the 19 year old child of Haitian immigrants to\u00a0New Jersey<\/a>, was one for all time.\u00a0 Demmpsey’s second half goal to make it two seemed inevitable, as the\u00a0Spanish could do nothing at the goal mouth, and\u00a0\u00a0Altidore cut through them like a razor through the first 45.\u00a0 Free State Stadium’s <\/a>pitch looked like his backyard.<\/p>\n
